NEWSDAILYNIGERIA– The Nigeria Union of Teachers, Chikun Local Government Chapter has held its congress meeting on Wednesday, at GSS Ungwan Baro, Sabon Tasha, Kaduna state, to deliberate on the proposed competency test by the Kaduna state government.

The meeting became necessary to sensitize its members on the stance taken by the State Wing of the union.

Recall that earlier last week, a circular was released by the Kaduna State Universal Basic Education (SUBEB), directing all the Acting Chairpersons of the 23 Local Governments of the state, to sensitize their primary school teachers, on the proposed competency test that will take place before the end of this year.

Speaking the Acting Educational Secretary of the Local Government, Mrs. Ruth Wasa, said she was sent by the government to inform teachers that the competency test is not intended to victimize any teacher, instead, the government wants to know the strength and weaknesses of teachers, especially in the science related subjects.

Reacting the local government NUT Chairman, Comrade Cyrus Hassan, said that the congress was as a result of the proposed competency test.

According to him ” the congress is all about making a decision, and taking a stand concerning the competency test of teachers, in which of course we are saying No to any competency test that will be done elsewhere apart from the classroom

“The teachers have already taken a stand that they are not going to write any competency test; to determine the competency of a teacher, that should be done down in the classroom” he added

He further said, what happened in 2017, should be a lesson to all. ” Taking back to 2017, over twenty one thousand were victimized, up til today none of them has been paid their entitlement and 50% percent of them are dead due to heart attack, so we don’t want such to repeat itself” he stated

Similarly, the State Wing Treasurer of the Union Comrade Sunday Garba, said that the government of the day is not doing enough to make the lives of primary school teachers a better one, adding that, it would be better to organize training instead of a competency test.

At the end of the Congress, a voice votes was carried out to find out the popularity of the state’s wing stance, and all the teachers unanimously said “No to competency test”.

The Union Chairman then thanked the representatives, and promised to convey the local government’s stance to the state wing.
