NEWSDAILYNIGERIA: The Honourable Minister of Defence has reaffirmed the Federal Government’s unwavering commitment to supporting the Nigerian Navy with the resources, capabilities, and enabling environment needed to build a technologically advanced, interconnected, and globally respected naval force capable of effectively safeguarding Nigeria’s maritime interests and regional waters.
The Minister made this statement while serving as the Special Guest of Honour at the 70th Anniversary Ceremonial Sunset Dinner and Awards Night, the grand finale of the Nigerian Navy’s weeklong celebrations marking seven decades of distinguished service to the nation.
In his remarks, the Minister underscored the importance of innovation and modern technologies in shaping the future of the Nigerian Navy, noting that emerging security challenges require a force equipped with advanced surveillance systems, intelligence capabilities, unmanned technologies, cyber defence tools, and data-driven operational platforms.
“The future of the Nigerian Navy lies in its ability to harness cutting-edge technology and strengthen collaboration with regional and international partners. A modern, technology-driven Navy will enhance maritime domain awareness and operational effectiveness and contribute significantly to collective security within the Gulf of Guinea and beyond,” the Minister stated.
He emphasised that the Federal Government remains committed to strengthening the Nigerian Navy’s operational capacity so it can continue to protect Nigeria’s maritime assets, safeguard national interests, and contribute meaningfully to national development, in line with its enduring motto, ‘Onward Together.’
The Minister congratulated the Chief of the Naval Staff and the entire Nigerian Navy for their outstanding achievements over the past seventy years, describing the Service as not only a highly professional force but also a model of organisational excellence, discipline, and resilience. He also expressed appreciation to Nigeria’s international partners for their enduring friendship, cooperation, and shared commitment to promoting maritime security and stability.
Highlighting the Navy’s contributions to national development, the Minister observed that its operations have had a profound and transformative impact on Nigeria’s blue economy by protecting strategic sea lanes, offshore oil and gas infrastructure, and other critical maritime assets. He noted that the Service has remained at the forefront of efforts to combat piracy, crude oil theft, illegal fishing, and other maritime crimes that threaten economic prosperity.
“The Nigerian Navy’s contributions extend beyond maritime security. Through its active participation in internal security operations and support to sister services and security agencies, it has played a vital role in maintaining peace, stability, and the secure environment necessary for economic growth and national development,” he said.
According to the Minister, these efforts have strengthened Nigeria’s sovereignty, enhanced investor confidence, facilitated trade and commerce, and positioned the country to fully harness the enormous opportunities within its maritime sector.
The Minister also congratulated officers and ratings who received awards and special recognition during the event, including those honoured posthumously for their exemplary service and sacrifice.
“Through your dedication,
professionalism, courage, and selfless service, you have upheld the highest traditions of the Nigerian Navy and inspired future generations of naval personnel. Tonight, we celebrate not only your individual accomplishments but also the collective spirit of excellence that continues to define and propel the Nigerian Navy forward,” he remarked.
The Significance of the Ceremonial Sunset
The Ceremonial Sunset remains one of the most cherished traditions of naval service worldwide. It symbolises duty, honour, discipline, and the seamless transition from one watch to another, serving as a powerful reminder that while individual responsibilities may conclude, the vigilance and commitment of the naval profession endure.
As the Nigerian Navy marks its 70th anniversary, the Ceremonial Sunset also provides an opportunity to reflect on seven decades of dedicated service, sacrifice, and professionalism in defence of Nigeria’s maritime domain. The recognition of outstanding personnel through awards further reinforces a culture of excellence, inspires greater commitment to service, and strengthens morale across the Service.
The Ministry of Defence joins all Nigerians in celebrating this historic milestone and commends the officers, ratings, and civilian personnel of the Nigerian Navy for their steadfast dedication to the security, unity, and prosperity of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
