NEWSDAILYNIGERIA — US President Donald Trump on Thursday welcomed Chinese President Xi Jinping to Washington for a high-stakes summit expected to focus on trade, artificial intelligence and global security issues.
Xi’s plane landed in Washington for a three-day state visit, which includes a meeting with Trump and a state dinner.
Unlike his treatment of several other visiting leaders, Trump personally welcomed Xi at Joint Base Andrews outside Washington.
The Chinese leader was received with a red-carpet ceremony lined by US service members and a military flyover, marking the start of his official visit.
Further ceremonial events are scheduled to include a state dinner attended by technology executives and a visit to the National Archives, where the original US Declaration of Independence and Constitution are preserved.
However, expectations of a major breakthrough from the summit remain low amid deep disagreements between Washington and Beijing.
Despite their differences, Trump and Xi proceeded with the meeting, which analysts said was intended partly to project stability in relations between the world’s two largest economies.
The two leaders are expected to discuss trade, artificial intelligence and the wars in Iran and Ukraine.
Xi is also expected to raise the issue of Taiwan, a subject Washington would prefer to avoid, while Trump is expected to maintain US export controls despite Beijing’s objections.
The summit comes amid continuing tensions between the United States and China over trade, technology, security and Taiwan.
