NEWSDAILYNIGERIA -As the World celebrates World International NO-Tobacco-Day on 31th May 2021, a non –Governmental organization, the Eye Opener Women and Youth Foundation has commenced raising awareness and campaign to teenagers , youth and women across the3 19 states of northern Nigeria

The aim is to sensitize them of the dangers associated with Tobacco and cigarette smoking.

According to the founder of the Non -governmental organization Mrs Margeret julius “They have mobilized many experts and other specialists to team-up with their volunteers , with the aims of taking “House-to-house Campaign” so as to educate women and children at home on dangers associated with Narcotics and other harmful substances.

The theme of the 2021 Campaign is “COMMIT TO QUIT” which is targetted at educating women and children at schools and communities on the harmful effect of tobacco across the northern states of Nigeria including the federal Capital of Nigeria-Abuja

Adding that this year’s campaign has some colors attached to it which include taking the Campaign from one ethnic group to another one ( ethnic -to- ethnic campaign in the northern region) in order to draw the attention of youth and women, so as to immensely Commit to quit Campaign while saying bye bye to all forms of drugs and Tobacco with other cigarette smoking;

“we used to tell the youth in the jingles that smokers are liable to die young simply to draw their attenton to quit smoking tobacco”

Smoking causes cancer, heart disease, stroke, lung diseases, diabetes, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), which includes emphysema and chronic bronchitis. Smoking also increases risk for tuberculosis, certain eye diseases, and problems of the immune system, including rheumatoid arthritis.

Margaret says , the “Quit Tobacco Movement campaign is now extended to every school to advocate for quitting consumption of tobacco among children, communities,ghettos, football field, traditional wrestling center,train station, bus station ,markets etc

She noted that ,there is increasing evidence that youth and young adults are an increasing segment of the tobacco using population,hence the need to join World Health Organization in taking the campaign to the grassroot.

“my team has dedicated one week in taking the campaign Jingle where youth usually gather and smoke indian herm, cigarette, and other local smoke”

“we are taking the campaign to religious places and traditional institution in order to get their support in the fight against all forms of cigeratte smoking and other dangerous and harmful substance”

Stressing that engaging and empowering youth in the tobacco awareness campaigns would help to create awareness on tobacco control among their peers, community.

World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) is celebrated on 31st May every year,which is an international day designated by the World Health Organisation (WHO) to advocate for effective policy aimed at reducing the global use of tobacco and tobacco-related products.

” we are going to used the week toward spreading the message of harmful effect of smoking among youth and women all over the states where we finds ourselves in order to sensitizes citizens ”

The founder of the NGO pointed that ,her organization has started” house -to -house campaign in some states of northern Nigeria since last week ,and the essence is to enabled us to meet with many women and childrens at home to raise more awareness on all the dangers associated with drugs and smoking all forms of tobacco.

According to her, the organization is targeting sensitizing -one -hundred thousand youths and women across the 19 northern states of Nigeria

The organization is going to use social media ,print papers and electronic media organizations to educate women and children on ways to join the fight against Tobacco and other cigarette smoking among teenagers.
