– As the River bank Markets crash prices of food items

NEWSDAILYNIGERIA- Hundreds of kaduna state residents from various ghetto/areas on daily basis now rush to (Kasuwar Manoma-Kasuwar Bakin kogin kaduna) and kasuwar Bakin-kogi –Unguwar Gado) to buy foodstuffs and other aquatic animals at cheaper prices.

The rise in the cost of foodstuffs in Nigerian Markets due to economic recession and corona-virus pendemic with security challenges has forced large numbers of Kaduna residents in patronising river banks’ markets.

Mallam Usman Abdullahi, a local farmer from kurmin kaduna says ” we supply all the farm crops to the river Banks in order to reduce the high cost of food items in the state”

Food crops like Vegetable, Okro, Tomatoes, pepper, onions, rice ,beans maize,Yam,Banana, and some times animals are sold at cheaper prices at the river Bank.

Stressing that, despite insecurity challenges ,farmers across the river bank are occupied with their farming activities which is aimed at supplying food stuffs to the nation, in order to tackle scarcity of food in the country.

Research revealed that all the Kaduna river Bank markets are places where the Poor, retailers, commercial businessmen and women including some neighbors usually go to buy foodstuffs and animals at affordable prices.

According to him, the rising cost of foodstuffs across the markets in the country is becoming a big threat to the existence of many families, as insecurity has forced many farmers to abandon their farmlands this year.

He said, hundreds of people from various places across the states do usually come here in their Cars ,motorcycles and buy foodstuffs and other commodities at cheaper Prices

He added that , their goods are sold directly to the poor and sometimes the retailers that usually come to the river banks for the business activities.

The prices of goods at the river bank is incomparable to the once in the major markets across the state simply because it’s cheaper and affordable

On her part, Mrs Elizabeth Lukas a retailer, from Unguwan –gwari Kaduna who usually comes to the River bank to buy foodstuffs and other commodities in order to supply to the central market Kaduna, pointed out that, this is the only place where the poor come from far and near to buy food stuffs at affordable prices

Adding that “I bought all the food stuffs that I want at a cheaper price here at the river bank directly from the local farmer”

“Most of the foodstuff that were at the central market , its from here they usually supply it from”

She said, retailers and other foodstuff suppliers prefer coming down here every morning to buy all the food stuffs, because it’s fresh, clean and its cheap ;

Although not all people know about the location of the market ,because it’s Behind a village called( Rafinguzza), buts it’s the main supplier of all the cash crops and other food items in the state.

Speaking ,Habibu Mustapha, one of the union leaders of the market said the river bank market provides an opportunity for both the sellers and the buyers to meet and bargain at affordable prices

The market plays a significant role towards boosting the state economy as well as providing an opportunity for employment to large number of buyers and sellers especially married women.

Stressing that many men and women are engaged into the business of supply different kind of foodstuffs from the river bank to the major market across the state

Similarly, one of the commercial Canoe Driver, Sani Musa , has appealed to the state government to help them and construct a bridge that can link the village to the state in order to reduce their yearly canoe capsizing

He noted that if kaduna state government would construct a bridge in the area, it would surely improved the supply of food crops from the villages to the major cities across the state

While calling on the need to assist the canoes drivers with some soft loans toward modernizing their local canoes with engine

Mr Sani James, a resident at Unguwan –Gado Kaduna says, he preferred coming to the river bank markets on daily basis to buy fish, ,craps and other aquatic animals because ” things here are cheaper ” he said

He then called on the people to be patronising river bank markets for easy access to fresh food stuffs and other aquatics aninals at the river banks
