NEWSDAILYNIGERIA: The Nigeria Union of Journalists,( NUJ) National Headquarters has strongly condemned the arrest of Journalist Dahiru Muktar, by Kano state government and called for his immediate and unconditional release.

The Union frowned at the growing attacks on Journalists by governments in efforts of the Media to hold the political class accountable.

In a statement issued by the National Secretary, Achike Chude, tagged, ” Growing Attack On Media, A case Of Dahiru Muktar, the Union further urged state actors to avoid all forms of actions inimical to Free Press and speech in Nigeria.

We note with grave concern, the arrest by the Police of Mr. Muktar Dahiru, a Journalist with Pyramid FM in Kano State.

” Mr Dahiru was arrested for articles, interviews and statements made by third parties that were deemed critical of the State government and Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi the 2nd.

” This latest act by authorities is not a surprise as it is another affirmation of growing attack on the media by state actors in a democracy.

” It is apparent that the political class across board in Nigeria do not seem to understand their responsibilities and those of the media.

” The protection and expansion of civic space in Nigeria should be primary responsibility of the political class and not its endangerment; when they fail in this regard or are found wanting, the media must step-in to hold them accountable.

” Should the journalist be found wanting in the execution of his responsibilities, there are adequate safeguards and avenues within the civic space for aggrieved individuals or government functionaries to seek redress; it is not, and, cannot be by open aggression, harassments and intimidation of journalists.

We have stated it before and will do so for the umpteenth time, that, the Nigerian media will not be cowed nor submit to the rule of might, over right!

” The Nigeria Union of Journalists therefore condemns in the strongest term possible, the arrest of Muktar Dahiru by authorities in Kano State; and call for his immediate and unconditional release.

It is our candid advice and appeal that state actors should desist from all forms of attack against free speech in our dear country Nigeria; It is a battle they cannot win.” the statement added.
