US President Donald Trump has announced plans to bar major American media outlets CNN, MS NOW and Politico from accessing the White House, accusing them of publishing “fiction and lies.”

Trump made the announcement on Friday in a post on his Truth Social platform, although he did not specify the reports that prompted the decision.

“Outlets shouldn’t be able to constantly write or report fiction and lies when they’re covering the President of the United States, the Trump Administration, or the United States of America,” he wrote.

The President also warned that other media organisations could face similar sanctions. “Other fake news media outlets to follow,” Trump added without naming the organisations or explaining the specific reporting he objected to.

The proposed ban would prevent journalists from the affected media organisations from attending White House press briefings and events in the Oval Office.

However, reporters from CNN, MS NOW and Politico remained on the White House grounds following Trump’s announcement.

CNN described the move as an “illegal assault” on press freedom, insisting that its reporting was fair, accurate and protected by the US Constitution.

Politico, owned by German media conglomerate Axel Springer, also vowed to defend its constitutional rights against any attempt to restrict its access. “We will vigorously defend our First Amendment rights against any attempt to restrict them,” the organisation said.

MS NOW, formerly known as MSNBC, had not issued a response to the announcement at the time of reporting.

The White House Correspondents’ Association, which represents journalists covering the US presidency, said it stood in defence of reporters “being singled out for doing their jobs.”

Similarly, the President of the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, Bruce Brown, described the proposed ban as “flatly unconstitutional.”

“The First Amendment is clear that once the White House invites in some journalists, it can’t ban others because it doesn’t like their reporting,” Brown said.

He added that such action amounted to “textbook viewpoint discrimination” and would likely be challenged in court.

Trump has had a longstanding dispute with sections of the American media, with tensions reportedly increasing during his second term.

His administration has introduced tighter controls on journalists covering presidential events, including determining which reporters can participate in media pools covering restricted locations such as the Oval Office and Air Force One.

In 2025, the White House restricted Associated Press journalists from attending some events after the news agency continued to use the name “Gulf of Mexico” instead of Trump’s preferred “Gulf of America.”

Several major media organisations refused to sign the document and withdrew from the Pentagon press room.
