By Frederick Peters, KADUNA

NEWSDAILYNIGERIA– The Kaduna state peace commission, (KAPECOM) has launched a ICT based, conflict early warning, early response system, (CEWERS) to help report threats to peace, security and harmonious coexistence aimed at mitigating violent conflict situations in the state.

The commission believed that with this breakthrough the community members are given the opportunity to collaborate with the commission. to nip in the bud, potential violent conflict situations before it gets out of hand, thereby complimenting their efforts towards sustainable peace in Kaduna state.

While addressing a press briefing on their activities at the commission’s office in Kaduna on Tuesday, the Chairman, Most Rev. Dr. Josiah Idowu- Fearon, said the support by the government of Norway and the United Nations Development Programme( UNDP) facilitated the establishment the ICT based CEWERS,

Which he noted is fully ” equipped with state of the art facilities that provide a platform for citizens to communicate and report incidences and threats to peace’

According to him, the” platform receives messages through verbal, short message service ( SMS or Text) email, Mobile App and Web portal adding that the mechanisms are inbuilt in the system to prompt immediate action by various emergency responders including the commission, security agencies, Traditional and religious leaders and local government peace committees among others

” we appeal to the media to help in publicising the availability of this platform so that the people of the state will be aware of its existence and use it to report threats to peace, security and harmonious coexistence ” he added

While acknowledging the consistent efforts of Kaduna state government under the leadership of Mallam Nasir El-Rufai towards peace building, he however lamented that incidences of violent conflicts have continued in parts of the state, especially in Zangon Kataf, kuara, Kauru and Jemaa LGs.

He said the Commission has over the years engaged in dialogue with every bodies and listen to all parties and groups, and above all responded to their concerns, worries, fears and needs of the citizens in the state, in pursuit of the peace.

He pointed out that, the Commission is also a active participant in the ongoing global campaign to end violence against women, while ” appealing to our citizens to speak and take appropriate action to end domestic and other forms of violence against the girl child and women”

While expressing optimism that success would soon be recorded in the affected LGs, adding that the ongoing mediation efforts in Fantsuan in Jemaa LG, Chawai, in. Kauru, and Afan Takad in Kaura LGs are already recording tremendous success. adding that the peace initiatives in Zangon Kataf are being strengthened to bring an end to the ongoing conflicts.

The revered cleric however noted that criminal activities including kidnapping persons for ransom, armed rubbery, rustling of cattle and raiding of villages for various motives still posed tremendous challenges in the course of their activities.

Speaking further, he cautioned against any form of profiling and stereotypes owing to the fact that most of the ” incidences are criminal in nature, they’ve strained inter-community relations especially in parts of Birnin Gawri, lgabi Giwa, Chikun, kajuru, Zangon Kataf, Jemaa LGs among others arising out of profiling and stereotyping of one group or the other” while urging people in the state to work with security agencies in reversing the trends of criminal activities.

While commending the efforts of the office of the SSG, Ministry of Internal security and MDAs in the state, he particularly, appreciated the” United States institute of peace, the government of Norway, the United Nations Development programme, Mercy corps, CLEEN Foundation and centre of Humanitarian Dialogue in supporting the commission in the various peace initiatives”

He then admonished all and sundry , saying ” collectively, we can achieve peace, collectively, we reverse the narratives that promote violence and build a consensus on the most important ways of pursuing the course of a common destiny, irrespective of the differences among us, i urge us all to work for peace, stand for peace and ensure peace wherever we are” he reiterated
