NEWSDAILYNIGERIA: President Muhammadu Buhari has Friday signed the electoral act as amended into law.

A signing ceremony was held at the Federal Executive Council (FEC) Chamber in the presidential villa, Abuja.

Senate President Ahmed Lawan, Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila, and Kayode Feyami the Chairman of the Nigeria Governors Forum (NGF), and other top government functionaries were all in attendance.

Recall that the legislation was earlier transmitted to the President for assent on January 31, after the lower and the upper chambers had reworked on it.

The President had earlier rejected the bill, citing direct primaries as the main reason. He said that the provision “violates the spirit of democracy.”

As a result of that, both chambers had to rework on it, to make provision for both direct and indirect primaries, as well as create room for consensus candidates.

Analysts and Nigerians believe that electoral act will go a long way in solving so many anomalies witnessed in the previous electoral acts hence deepening the acceptability of our elections
