Nigeria’s Opposition Parties: A House In Disarray

The current state of opposition politics in Nigeria is indeed a far cry from the robust checks and balances expected in a democratic setup.

Lack of Cohesion and Vision
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the primary opposition party, has struggled to present a united front. Their presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has seemingly abandoned his role as the leader of the opposition, opting for a quiet life as a private citizen. This lack of leadership has left the PDP without a clear direction or public face, rendering them ineffective in holding the government accountable.

Internal Squabbles and Party Defections
The Labour Party and the New Nigerian People’s Party (NNPP) are not immune to these challenges. Labour Party senators have been at odds over issues like budgetary allocations, while the NNPP has been plagued by internal rivalries and court battles. These squabbles have weakened the opposition’s ability to present a cohesive alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

Failure to Utilize Legislative Powers
Despite having a significant presence in the National Assembly, opposition parties have failed to effectively utilize their legislative powers to check the government’s excesses. They have largely backed the government’s budget decisions, with some even accepting positions in the Tinubu administration while still harboring presidential ambitions. This has led to questions about their commitment to genuine opposition.

The Way Forward
For opposition parties to be effective, they need to demonstrate a genuine commitment to democratic principles and the welfare of Nigerians. This requires:
