NEWSDAILYNIGERIA: Stakeholders within Nigeria’s civil society space have identified community education as a critical pillar for developing sustainable responses to substance abuse, particularly among young people.

Experts and practitioners say education-driven strategies are helping to reduce stigma, improve understanding of substance-related risks, and encourage early intervention at the grassroots level.

Organisations involved in preventive education stress that raising awareness within communities fosters shared responsibility and strengthens local capacity to address substance abuse challenges before they escalate.

These efforts often involve schools, community-based groups, families, and traditional and religious leaders working collaboratively to promote healthy lifestyles and informed decision-making.

One of the organisations at the forefront of this approach is HopePath Community Development Foundation, a Nigerian non-profit focused on youth-centred public health education and community sensitisation.

Through school-based programmes, sensitisation campaigns, and public education initiatives, the Foundation aims to equip communities with practical knowledge and tools to prevent drug abuse and its associated social, health, and economic consequences.

Founder and Executive Director of HopePath Foundation, Alhaji Abubakar Muhammad Diga, has consistently underscored the importance of prevention-focused education in strengthening community resilience.

He noted that many young people are exposed to substance abuse risks without adequate information or support systems, making early education essential.

“Prevention remains the most sustainable response to drug abuse,” Diga said. “When communities are informed and young people are empowered with the right knowledge, the long-term social costs are significantly reduced.”

Speaking in Zaria, the Foundation reiterated that early education, community awareness, and family involvement are among the most effective tools for reducing drug-related harm, especially in urban and semi-urban communities.

According to the organisation, evidence-based prevention models that prioritise awareness can deliver better outcomes than approaches that focus solely on enforcement or rehabilitation.

HopePath Foundation operates as a community-focused organisation, engaging youths, educators, and community leaders on the realities of substance misuse and promoting responsible choices.

The organisation also advocates stronger collaboration between civil society groups, government institutions, and development partners to ensure coordinated and inclusive responses to drug-related challenges.

Experts observe that the growing emphasis on education-led prevention reflects a broader shift within public health and social development frameworks toward inclusive, proactive strategies. They note that community-driven interventions tend to achieve more sustainable results when aligned with national policies and supported by consistent stakeholder engagement.

A registered non-governmental organisation in Nigeria, HopePath Community Development Foundation continues to expand its advocacy and community outreach efforts.

The Foundation says it remains committed to accountability, transparency, and measurable social impact as it works to build resilient communities capable of addressing substance abuse proactively rather than reactively.
