IDSL: Expert Urges TV Stations To Recruit Sign Language Interpreters, As World Celebrates Day

NEWSDAILYNIGERIA– The Chairman Association of sign language interpreters of Nigeria, Kaduna State Chapter, Mr Nuhu Ayuba has called on Media organizations, especially the Television houses to employ sign language interpreters as part of their workforce.

This he noted will help facilitate easy communication of their broadcast services to their numerous viewers particularly those having hearing impairments.

In a statement made available to newsmen on Friday in Kaduna, the Chairman further called for special and increased awareness, as the world celebrates the International Day of Sign Language, (IDSL) with the theme” Sign Language are for every one” slated for 23rd September, 2021.

” The UN general assembly has proclaimed 23rd September as the international day for sign language (IDSL) in order to increase awareness and commemorate the day to elevate understanding of the value of Sign language in order to call on the members of the public to learn and spread the use of Sign language.

” The theme for this year as proclaimed by the UN has come at a good time “Sign language are for everybody”.

” We therefore appeal on members of the public to brace up against all forms of challenges and discriminations to learn the Sign language to overcome any form of marginalization as hearing handicapped are hardworking and serious people.

” Further more, the use of Sign language should be involved toward sensitizing the hearing impairment against contracting COVID-19 as many of our people are left behind in this crusade.” he said

According to him, in the ” World Federation of the Deaf (WFD), there are roughly 72 millions deaf individuals worldwide. greater than 80% of them are residing in an under developed countries. they utilize greater than 300 various sign languages.

” Lastly, I want to appreciate the government of Kaduna State and the director of Kaduna State rehabilitation board in person of Mal. Aliyu Haruna Yakasai for employing Two sign language interpreters into their workforce.

” I want to call on other MDAs and Television stations to employ sign language interpreters to have an inclusive working environment.” he added
