NEWSDAILYNIGERIA– The Interfaith mediation centre, (IMC) Kaduna, under the Community initiatives for promotion of peace,( CIPP) has ended a two Day Early warnings and early response,(EWER) plan and structure engagement for Community mitigation regional council,CMMRC) and Community peace observers,( CPOs) in Kaduna.

The workshop which held on Monday- Tuesday attracted religious and traditional leaders, key stakeholders, CMMRC and CPOs members from across selected local government areas, among others in the State,

Speaking the Coordinator of the Early warnings and response, (EWER) system , Mr Samson Auta, said the essence of the strategic engagement is to foster peace in communities and also avail communities opportunities with initiatives that enhances peace among the locals

” we had this two day program, because we have structures that work on early warnings and early response, which comprises of community peace observers, (CPOs) at the grassroot, we also have the Conflict mitigation management regional council,( CMMRC), which operates at the state level, comprising of various stakeholders, from government, religious and traditional leaders, labour unions, women and youth organizations, media among others’ he added

He said coming together has afforded them the opportunity to discuss activities implemented in communities, some lessons learnt and successes achieved based on some of the activities carried out adding that part of what was discussed and shared by participants are some of the challenges that enhanced some of the things they do and the other challenges within the communities to be addressed in future

” so sharing of these experiences and recommendations will go along way to help most of this structures under the context that each operates and it also enables us supporting the structures under the CIPP to look at some of these issues, see where we can come in other areas, where we can collaborate to achieve peace within communities”

According to him, the program has availed them the opportunity to deal with both horizontal and vertical linkages that initially existed among structures ” but today, it has availed the opportunity to know who and who are in the structures

Speaking further that, one key area of success is working with Kaduna State peace commission, to see how we can link up to share early warnings to the commission, and get adequate responses, ” what we do is create the platform, based on the work we do to complement government efforts and other stakeholders in the promotion of peace in our communities” he reiterated

Similarly, the representative of the Kaduna State Peace Commission, Mr Saleh Nurudeen Bashar, said the two Day engagement has been” an interesting one, it is an event that go inline with the mandate of the commission; that’s bringing initiatives, implementing activities and programs that are geared towards promoting peaceful coexistence in Kaduna

” and the peace commission sees organizations that have such dreams as critical partners, moreover, IMC has been playing a very important role when it comes to Interfaith matters; because to some extend, some of the problems we are having has an Interfaith coloration, so bringing together religious leaders and adherents of different faiths to sit together and discuss, address issues is something important ” he added

According the Commission’s CEWER Analyst , one of reasons for the program is to see how to strengthen early warnings, early response systems; adding that, as a commission, ” it’s a very important engagement because the commission has a conflict early warnings and early response systems; so leveraging on existing CPOs and CMMRC, it will go a long way to receive early warning signals that might threaten peace and stability in the state” he stated

On his part the Chairman, Community mitigation management regional council, (CMMRC), Alh. Yusuf Usman said ” CMMRC as a matter of fact, we coordinate along with our Community peace observers, (CPOs) on issues of early warnings and early response, maintain peace in the communities, we do much that we come between the government and the public, inform the government and actions can be taken immediately

He said the take home of the program are many; one is to bring all the members from various places, update every one, share ideas and go back to re-stratagize and do the work as much as we can do for peace in our communities and state” While expressing satisfaction on what they do saying ” its an humanitarian job, so no matter, you still have to boost the morale of members to do more for peace in Kaduna ” he reiterated

In the same vein, one of the Community Peace observers, (CPOs) Coordinator for Kachia local government area, Mr Daniel Bitrus noted that the major role CPOs play in communities is ” indicating crisis situations and reporting them before it escalates to violence adding that in life, we cannot takeaway crisis

” but when it comes, we try to manage it, not to have a bigger effect on the society, by reporting them to the appropriate authorities, we have the CMMRC whicb we link with at the upper level and the security personnel” he said

Describing the brainstorming parley as ‘great’ because it was an interaction with people from all waIks of life, sharing views and opinions on how to mitigate crisis not escalating into violence, ” it’s kind of a refresher course,” , adding that, the take home now is still the message of peace, where people are brought together irrespective of religion, tribe and sections and the essence is the need to live in peace ” he stressed
