NEWSDAILYNIGERIA: The AID Foundation has decried the huge total debt profile accrued to North west zone, Nigeria, within the period under review.

The group maintained that the Debt Justice campaign launched recently is aimed at facilitating platforms for amplifying the views of citizens on public Debts in the zone.

Addressing a Press Briefing at the NUJ Press Centre, Kaduna, on Monday, the Executive Director, AID Foundation, Emmanuel Bonet, further announced a competition with over 700k to be won by deserving participants, aimed at eliciting views on other sources of revenue, among others.

” It is no longer news that AID Foundation launched a debt justice campaign on the 11th of December 2023 where representatives of Government, Civil Society, Media and Professional Bodies from each of the seven States of the Northwest converged in Kaduna to validate their respective debt profile.

” The total debt profile of the zone which stands at N1.2 trillion appeared to be a concern for a especially when compared with the people’s expectation of related development, hence the need fo AID Foundation in partnership with CISLAC and support from Christian AID is facilitating avenue that will keep the discussion in the front burner so that more citizens are informed of who, when, and for what debt are collected as well as give them the opportunity to air their views on th subject matter.

” Today, we are launching a competition that is aimed at eliciting the views of residents of Kebbi, Sokoto, Zamfara, Katsina, Kano, Jigawa and Kaduna State on the diverse ways in which the think that their State governments can source funds that will be used for development.

” There is a total token sum of seven hundred thousand naira (N700,000) to be contested for and wo by residents of the Northwest Nigeria. Each contestant will either record a video or audio of not mo than 2 minutes or write an essay of not more that 200 words outlining their suggestions of what the think their various State Governments should do to generate additional sources of revenue that ca be used for the development of their States.

” The competition is open to all from ages 18 and they should be residents of the State they a providing solutions for. 14 Judges have been selected from tertiary and professional institution across the Zone and will use criteria such as adherence to the rules of time, words and hashtag and also the quality of input or suggestions etc in selecting winners.

” We believe, that for us to move progressively as a nation, our Governments should explore oth sources of funding while improving in the area of inclusion, transparency, accountability, and pub finance management to explore inwards.

” We therefore, call on everyone to join the discussions that have now moved online as well participate in the radio programs currently ongoing in the zone.

” We want to express our appreciation to the Nigerian Union of Journalist (NUJ) Kaduna State Chapter for their support for the successful convening of this conference.” the statement added.
