…Calls for Urgent Govt Action

NEWSDAILYNIGERIA: The Birnin Gwari Emirate Progressives Union (BEPU) has expressed concern over emerging security challenges in parts of Birnin Gwari Emirate, warning that recent incidents could undermine the relative peace achieved in the area over the past two years.

In a statement issued by its Chairman, Dr. Isah Muhammad, the union acknowledged the significant progress recorded in restoring peace and stability through the collaborative efforts of government authorities, security agencies, traditional institutions and community stakeholders.

According to BEPU, the improved security situation had enabled residents to gradually resume their normal socio-economic activities, while also serving as a model for conflict resolution and peacebuilding in other communities.

However, the union noted that a few criminal elements operating within forest areas have continued to pose a threat to public safety by refusing to embrace ongoing peace initiatives and disarmament efforts.

BEPU stated that reports from affected communities indicate that some armed individuals have been invading farmlands, intimidating farmers and dispossessing residents of motorcycles, mobile phones and other valuables.

The union warned that the recurring incidents have heightened anxiety among residents, particularly as farmers intensify cultivation activities during the current rainy season.

The situation, according to BEPU, was further compounded by the recent killing of Ibrahim Adamu, a commercial driver from Birnin Gwari, who was reportedly attacked and killed while travelling from Kaduna to Birnin Gwari near the Buruku area of Chikun Local Government Area.
The tragic incident, which occurred a few days ago, has generated widespread grief and renewed concerns among residents over the sustainability of the peace process in the emirate.

BEPU also disclosed that the killing sparked tension within the community, leading to the assault of three Fulani individuals by some aggrieved persons before security personnel intervened to restore calm.

The union confirmed that the victims received medical treatment and were subsequently discharged, adding that no fatalities were recorded during the incident.

Condemning all forms of violence and reprisal attacks, BEPU stressed that the overwhelming majority of residents remain committed to peaceful coexistence and do not want a return to the years of widespread banditry that devastated the area.

The organisation therefore urged the Kaduna State Government and security agencies to take immediate and decisive measures to address the emerging threats before they escalate into a broader security crisis.

Among its key demands, BEPU called for urgent action to tackle rising insecurity in eastern parts of Birnin Gwari, particularly around communities such as Kuyello, as well as intensified efforts to stop the seizure of property belonging to farmers and residents.

The union further appealed for renewed operations aimed at recovering illegal firearms still in the possession of criminal elements, enhanced intelligence gathering, increased security patrols across farming communities and major roads, and a comprehensive review of the ongoing peace process.

BEPU emphasized that any deterioration in security could have far-reaching consequences for agricultural production and food security, noting that Birnin Gwari remains one of Kaduna State’s major farming areas and contributes significantly to food supplies within and outside the state.

The union called on residents to remain calm, law-abiding and vigilant, while urging politicians and other stakeholders to avoid actions capable of inflaming tensions as preparations for the 2027 general elections gradually gather momentum.
