,,,NAF Denies any Airspace violation

NEWSDAILYNIGERIA: West Africa was thrown into fresh diplomatic and security tension today after the Burkinabé military regime confirmed it is holding 11 Nigerian military personnel following the forced landing of a Nigerian Air Force (NAF) C-130 cargo aircraft in Bobo-Dioulasso, southwest Burkina Faso.

According to statements attributed to authorities within the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) — the security bloc comprising Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger — the Nigerian military aircraft was accused of violating AES-controlled airspace without authorization, triggering a swift response from Burkinabé forces.

Preliminary reports indicate that the NAF C-130 aircraft was en route to Tamale, Ghana, when it reportedly encountered an emergency situation mid-flight. During the episode, the aircraft’s transponder was switched off, either deliberately or as a consequence of the unfolding emergency.

With the transponder inactive, the aircraft went off radar (“ghosted”), deviating from its original flight path and continuing northwest into Burkinabé airspace, a region currently under heightened military alert due to terrorism and regional insecurity.

Upon detecting the aircraft inside its airspace, the Burkinabé military — operating under strict AES airspace rules — moved quickly. The plane was forced to make an emergency landing in Bobo-Dioulasso, where the aircraft was secured and 11 Nigerian military personnel on board were detained.

In a strongly worded statement, AES authorities reiterated that:
“Any unauthorized aircraft violating AES airspace will be neutralized.”

The declaration underscores the bloc’s hardened posture amid ongoing regional instability, insurgency threats, and strained relations with neighboring and Western-aligned states.

Key questions remain unanswered:
Was the transponder shutdown purely accidental due to the emergency?

How soon will diplomatic channels resolve the detention of Nigerian personnel?

The incident highlights the fragile security environment in the Sahel and West Africa, where military regimes, airspace control, and counterterrorism measures increasingly intersect with regional diplomacy.

With Nigeria playing a major role in West African security, the detention of its military personnel — even under emergency circumstances — adds another layer of complexity to already tense regional relations.

All eyes are now on Abuja and Ouagadougou, as diplomatic engagements are expected to determine the fate of the detained Nigerian personnel and prevent a further escalation in a region already on edge.

But according to the Director of Public Relations and Information, Headquarters, Nigerian Air Force, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, the aircraft landed in the West African country due to a “technical concern”.

“The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) wishes to clarify reports regarding the diversion of a NAF C-130 aircraft during its ferry mission to Portugal on 8 December 2025. Following takeoff from Lagos, the crew observed a technical concern which necessitated a precautionary landing in Bobo-Dioulasso, Burkina Faso, the nearest airfield, in accordance with standard safety procedures and international aviation protocols,” Ejodame said in a statement on Tuesday.
