NEWSDAILYNIGERIA: The National Association of Persons with Physical Disabilities (NAPWPD) has urged Journalists and media media organisations to intensify efforts in promoting accessibility and inclusion for persons with disabilities across Nigeria.

NAPWPD lamented the unabated barriers in public infrastructure, transportation, and weak enforcement of disability laws continue to exclude thousands of Nigerians from fully participating in society.

Addressing a media briefing on Wednesday, at the Kaduna State Disability Affairs Board, the association’s National President, Rilwan Mohammed Abdullahi, called for concerted efforts in promoting accessibility and inclusion nationwide.

He noted that many public buildings, including government offices, schools, hospitals, and markets, lack basic accessibility features such as ramps, elevators, and accessible toilets, making it difficult for persons with mobility challenges to access essential services

.

The association also highlighted transportation as a major challenge, stressing that most public and commercial vehicles are not designed to accommodate persons with disabilities, thereby limiting their access to education, healthcare, and employment opportunities.

The group further expressed concern over poor implementation of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, despite its provisions mandating accessibility in public spaces and services.

According to the group, low awareness and weak enforcement have hindered compliance with the law.

The association emphasized the role of the media in driving change, urging increased coverage of disability issues, investigative reporting on accessibility gaps, and public enlightenment campaigns to boost awareness and accountability.

“Accessibility is not a luxury but a basic requirement for inclusion,” Abdullahi said, adding that inclusive infrastructure benefits not only persons with disabilities but also other groups, including the elderly and pregnant women.
