NEWSDAILYNIGERIA— The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), Kaduna State Chapter, has called on government, parents, traditional institutions, civil society organisations and other stakeholders to strengthen efforts towards protecting the rights, education and wellbeing of the girl child.

In a statement released by Dr. Hadiza Bello Abdullahi, Secretary (NAWOJ) to commemorate the 2026 International Day of the Girl Child, the Chairperson of NAWOJ Kaduna State Chapter, Hajiya Sahura Jibrin Maidoki, emphasised the need to create a safe and supportive environment where every girl can access quality education, healthcare and opportunities to fulfil her potential.

The association stressed that issues such as child marriage, gender-based violence, sexual abuse, discrimination and barriers to education continue to threaten the development and future of many girls.

NAWOJ called for increased investment in girls’ education, improved access to menstrual health services, stronger child protection mechanisms and the meaningful inclusion of girls in decisions affecting their lives.

The association also urged parents and community leaders to challenge harmful practices, promote positive values and ensure that girls are given equal opportunities to learn, lead and contribute to society.

NAWOJ Kaduna State Chapter reaffirmed its commitment to using journalism and public enlightenment to raise awareness of girls’ rights, amplify their voices and hold relevant authorities accountable for policies and programmes designed to protect them.

The association called on media organisations to promote responsible, child-sensitive reporting that safeguards the dignity, privacy and best interests of girls, particularly survivors of abuse and other vulnerable children.

NAWOJ maintained that investing in the girl child is an investment in stronger families, healthier communities and a more prosperous society.
